History of the WNYSLL

Summer Lacrosse in WNY began in the late 1980s with Ed Vantine and WYNLA organizing lacrosse events at the NIKE Base in Hamburg. Players would meet and teams would be organized on balanced ability. They would play the months of July and August.

Orchard Park was hosting similar gatherings during these years under the direction of Gene Tundo where Northtown players where invited to join in the fun.

In 1994, Ed Greenway (ALA/ Williamsville East) and Brian Lind from Lancaster started summer programs in the Northtowns.

As the game of lacrosse continued to expand summer programs were established throughou the region and these teams eventually banded together into today what is known as the Western New York Summer Lacrosse League.
